Since the B-1B first became operational in October 1986, the aircraft has undergone an almost constant upgrade program. One continuing program is the Conventional Mission Upgrade Program which includes a number of weapons upgrade phases. The latest upgrade to be incorporated into the aircraft makes the B-1B capable of carrying up to 30 Cluster Bombs - each of which has 202 bomblets. The next upgrade program will integrate GPS navigation and Joint Direct Attack Munitions capability. Other planned upgrade projects include upgrade of the aircraft computers (guidance, navigation, weapons delivery, terrain following, etc.) and defensive systems. Further weapons upgrades planned are Wind Corrected Munition Dispenser and a Towed Decoy System. Further enhancement programs will allow the B-1B to continue in USAF service until 2010 and beyond. Crew: Aircraft Commander, Pilot, Offensive Systems
Operator, Defensive Systems Operator
