The MiG-25 Foxbat (first flying in 1978) is a high performance, high altitude interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft. It was the USSR's answer to high flying American aircraft like the B-70, F-108 and SR-71.

While the MiG-25 lacked technological refinement, its performance caused much concern in the West because it was designed to function both as a long- range interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft and in the Middle-East it proved invulnerable to the Israeli F-4 Phantom IIs.

There are several versions of this aircraft:
A - basic interceptor
B - reconnaissance
C - two-seat trainer
D - reconnaissance with a modified radar
E - low altitude interceptor/reconnaissance

The center fuselage is a large, welded steel fuel tank - so avionics, radar or cameras are in the nose. Speed is limited to Mach 2.8 mainly by controllability problems.

The Mig-25 is operated by numerous countries that include Algeria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Libya, Russia, Syria and Ukraine.

Production of the fighter ended in 1983.  Over 1200 have been built, of which about 75% were interceptors.
