Formerly known as the Su-27M, the Sukhoi Su-35 is an advanced derivative of the Su-27 Flanker.

The first Su-27M prototype was displayed at the 1992 Farnborough Air Show and the Su-35 entered service in 1996.

Changes from the Su-27 include a new radar that required a larger nose; fore planes; more powerful engines; an enlarged and improved infrared search and track unit in front of the cockpit; an infrared missile-warning scanner on the fuselage spine; numerous internal electronic improvements; larger tail fins that are squared at the tops (required by aerodynamic changes imposed by the enlarged nose); and a large spine between the engines containing a rearward-facing air-to-air radar which allows for the use of rear-firing semi-active radar guided missiles. Additionally, the aircraft uses two-dimensional thrust-vectoring engine nozzles.

The new N-011 radar has a range of up to 250 miles (or 125 miles against ground targets) and can simultaneously track more than fifteen targets, of which it can engage six. An advanced data link allows coordinated group operation and the tail cone houses the antenna for a rear-facing radar which will allow "over-the-shoulder" missile shots.

The aircraft is armed with one 30mm cannon equipped with 150 rounds plus up to 17,636 lbs of missiles and ordnance carried on eleven external hardpoints. Air-to-air missiles include the R-27, R-73 laser guided, R-77 and KS-172. Additionally anti-bunker, anti-armor and anti-radar munitions are employed.
