Fully assembled museum quality wooden models

The Midway Class aircraft carriers had heavier armor and more armament than contemporary fleet carriers of the time. Initially designated as Large Carriers (CVB) they were soon re-designated as CV. Once the largest carriers afloat, the 1,000-foot-long warships displaced 45,000 tons when built. When operating at sea, the ships were refueled every three days - burning approximately 100,000 gallons of oil a day.

The ships were extensively modernized with such new innovations as an enclosed bow and angled flight deck. The original hydraulic catapults were replaced with more powerful steam catapults, and advanced sensor and communication suites were added.

Following modernization, the ships displaced more than 67,000 tons if fully loaded. Sponsons were added along the hull to improve freeboard and sea keeping ability - but the bulges actually made the problem worse and flight operations were nearly impossible in 6-10 foot seas. Still the Midway Class "flat-tops" were an outstanding example of successful re-fitting. Operating piston-driven propeller aircraft initially, they all returned from their last deployments carrying the Navy's most modern, multi-purpose strike-fighters.
